Playoffs: semifinals WHAT: Patterson High at Hilmar WHEN: 7:30 p.m. Friday WHERE: Hilmar High, 7807 N. Lander Ave., in Hilmar These bitter Western Athletic Conference rivals won’t have to wait until next year to renew their long-running football feud. Patterson High will travel again to Hilmar on Friday in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division V semifinals. The Nov. 14 meeting between the teams went to Hilmar. The Yellowjackets benefited from a bizarre call late in the fourth quarter of the regular season finale, narrowly avoiding a Tigers comeback and escaping with a 13-10 win. “I know (Hilmar coach) Frank Marques and I know his guys will not overlook us,” Patterson coach Rob Cozart said. “But this is a rivalry among our guys and coaches. It won’t be hard for our guys to get themselves up for this game.” The Tigers had to travel a long way just to earn another shot at Hilmar. ![]() THE TASK AHEAD: Rob Cozart talks to his team after defeating Argonaut in overtime Friday. In the secon round of the playoffs, his squad faces a Hilmar attack that amassed 555 yeards against Modessto Christian in its playoff opener. Patterson (8-3) composed a dazzling fourth-quarter comeback en route to an overtime win in its 24-21 victory over Argonaut of Jackson in the first round. The Tigers scored 21 points in the second half — after failing to score before halftime — winning the game in the extra session on Eric Mejia’s 20-yard field goal. Hilmar’s offense proved unstoppable in its playoff opener, piling up 555 yards in a 55-14 blowout of Modesto Christian. Yellowjackets running back Hugh Ewing ran 27 times for 174 yards and three touchdowns, while quarterback Quinton McCown was 10-of-16 passing for 271 yards and two scores. For Patterson quarterback Daniel Reza, there is nothing like a playoff rematch between league rivals to get the adrenaline pumping. “You never want to lose, but I would rather be the team that lost the first time when we have a rematch, especially with what is at stake,” Reza said. “We lost the game against Hilmar; they didn’t win it.” Officials waved off Mejia’s potential game-tying 40-yard field goal with one minute, 15 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter of the Week 10 meeting. A rare penalty was called on Patterson’s linemen — their legs interlocked illegally on the play — negating the kick and penalizing the Tigers 5 yards. Mejia’s 45-yard attempt drifted left, and Hilmar (10-1) walked away victorious. Still, the Tigers can’t afford to wait again until the fourth quarter to wage an attack. Patterson was kept in check early in the team’s first meeting, scoring only three points in the opening half. Patterson’s offense will need to show up earlier in Friday’s rematch. “We should have stepped it up way earlier than the second half,” Patterson receiver Ronyea Ellington said. “We were supposed to come out mad and ready to fire off, and we didn’t.” Defensively, the Tigers must keep McCown and Ewing at bay. “We have to mix it up on defense like we did the first time,” Cozart said. “We have to play good fundamental football. “And we have to stay away from turnovers and get good solid play on offense, defense and special teams.”
