For avid football contest participant Carl Frunz, a man whose dedication spans several decades, it was only a matter of time before his lucky day came again. He joined fellow Patterson resident David Molina in winning prizes in Week 2 of the Irrigator’s weekly football contest. Frunz, an 87-year resident of Patterson, won $20 for correctly picking the winners of 19 of 22 games, including the Tampa Bay upset of New Orleans and Cleveland’s surprise win over Cincinnati in NFL action. “I haven’t missed one entry since it started,” Frunz said. “I’ve had a perfect score before. It’s been several years since I last won. My wife has won a couple times. I like all sports.” In the tiebreaker contest, David Molina correctly guessed the score of Patterson’s huge win against small-school rival Escalon, 28-13. “I was born and raised here in Patterson,” Molina said. “I knew Escalon was pretty tough, but I knew Patterson would pull it out. I just had a good feeling.” Molina won a tool set from True Value Hardware that, he says, could have been helpful over the weekend, when his vehicle needed some repairs. “My car broke down yesterday, and I was looking for tools,” Molina said Monday. “That would have come in handy.” Because no contestant picked all 22 games correctly, the jackpot increases to $300 for Week 3 of the Irrigator football contest. Entry forms are due by 5 p.m. Friday at the Irrigator office, 26 N. Third St. Mailed entries must be postmarked by 5 p.m. Friday.
