Tigers face no cupcakes in season-opening scrimmage Print E-mail

MODESTO — It’s expected that the Patterson High girls basketball team will go through some growing pains at the beginning of the season.

So third-year coach Jason McCleery couldn’t be blamed if he had some “cupcakes” on the schedule to start the new campaign.

Instead, the Tigers traveled to Modesto Christian on Saturday, scrimmaging against a pair of formidable nonleague opponents, beginning with Turlock and ending with Tokay.

“It was a chance to play some intense basketball,” McCleery said.

Although no official scores were kept, Patterson’s offense — competing without standout player Cassie Coble — struggled to score in the two practice games.

“For some of the girls, it’s been almost a year since they played,” McCleery said. “Some have never played at the varsity level.

“This is kind of what I expected.”

But don’t mistake McCleery’s early assessment for a lack of confidence in his team. By the time Western Athletic Conference play arrives, McCleery expects his girls to be competitive.

For now, he is trying to maintain perspective when talking about the progress of his team.

“In the end, if they can take something out of this, then it will all be worth it,” McCleery said. “And that’s all I really expected from them (Saturday).

“This is a time to improve, a time to get in some practice and a chance for us to get better.”

Patterson will continue to be tested throughout the nonleague season.

The Tigers are slated for an early season rematch with Turlock. And the team also faces off against McNair and Bear Creek, both of Stockton.

Patterson’s tournament schedule is also chock-full of tough multigame outings in Merced, Modesto and Tracy.

“We know we have a lot to work on,” McCleery said. “We’ll do that and try to get better over the Thanksgiving break.
“There’s still time for us to get ready for what’s ahead.”
