When Jason McCleery isn’t priming the Patterson High girls basketball team for a new season of Western Athletic Conference play, he’s sneaking a peek at as much football — college and NFL — as possible. “I do watch a lot of football, and I keep up with what’s going on,” said McCleery, the Tigers’ varsity girls basketball coach. “I also do a little bit of research (for the contest).” And his research has paid off. McCleery is the Week 10 winner of the Irrigator’s football contest. He compiled an 18-2 record, tying Turlock’s Mia Cedres for the best record of the week. McCleery’s tie-breaker guess was within four points of the game’s actual outcome, giving him the win and the $20 weekly prize. “The contest is always tough,” McCleery said. “I would say it’s like 80-20. “On 80 percent of the games, I can go on what I’ve seen, and on 20 percent of the games I’ll have to put a little research in.” The search still continues for the elusive perfect 20-0 record. This week, the jackpot jumps to $1,100, with only two weeks remaining in the contest. Contest forms are available at the Irrigator office or by logging on to the newspaper’s Web site. Entries may be turned in from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday.
