Hilmar stings JV Tigers in season finale Print E-mail

“We were happy with the way we played all year, but we would have liked to have finished strong tonight.”

— Steve Cardoso

Patterson High JV football coach

HILMAR — The Patterson High junior varsity football season began with high expectations for a successful season — and there were valid reasons behind that.

While nobody on the sideline seemed to be resting on their laurels, the Tigers ripped through the majority of their schedule with a certain swagger in their step.

Still, the Tigers struggled down the stretch, including losing Friday’s 35-20 tilt against Western Athletic Conference foe Hilmar at McSweeney Field in the season finale.

“Tonight didn’t reflect how we played all year long,” Patterson coach Steve Cardoso said. “We came out and gave it our best effort with what we had.”

Cardoso remained pleased with his team’s efforts despite losing its past two games. The Tigers finished the season 7-3.

“I think that we had a really successful season,” Cardoso said. “Most teams would love to have our record.

“We were happy with the way that we played all year, but we would have liked to have finished strong tonight.”

Hilmar struck first Friday. Yellowjackets running back Carlos Diaz punched in the game’s first touchdown, falling forward for a 2-yard score and a 7-0 lead.

Patterson waited until the second quarter to respond. Back Jimmy Guerrero set the Tigers up at Hilmar’s 10-yard line, following his 40-yard scamper through the Yellowjackets’ defense and up the sideline.

But a false-start penalty backed the Tigers up 5 yards to the 15.

Patterson quarterback Cody Weinzheimer made the most of the situation, using the additional field to spot Rodney Lawson for a 14-yard touchdown strike to cut Hilmar’s lead to 7-6.

With five minutes, 41 seconds remaining in the first half, Hilmar mounted its second scoring drive of the game. Patterson helped, giving the Yellowjackets 15 yards on a roughing-the-passer penalty.

Diaz eventually carried the ball 11 yards and into the end zone for a 13-6 halftime advantage.

Patterson started with the ball in the third quarter but could not foster enough momentum to sustain its drive. The Tigers eventually punted the ball away to Hilmar.

Diaz caught the ball at his own 48-yard line, quickly found a wedge of blockers and disappeared up the field for a 52-yard touchdown return, increasing the lead to 19-6.

With their offense now clicking, the Yellowjackets soon tacked on a field goal and another touchdown, cushioning their advantage, 29-6.

Patterson managed to outscore Hilmar 14-6 in the fourth quarter, but it wasn’t enough. After the game, Cardoso spoke about the young core of talent on his team.

“I think that there are a number of players that are really going to make an impact on the varsity team next year,” Cardoso said. “There is a lot of talent at different levels and in different positions.

“There are good things coming for Patterson in the near future.”
