Prop. 8 is about hate

EDITOR,
In response to recent letters to the editor, I would like to say support for Proposition 8 is about hate and segregation. A letter mentioned the Bible as word that you follow and that it is the law you should be living by and making your decision by.

A recent writer was upset that Scott McKinley referenced the Bible. McKinley merely pointed out that there is a lot of looseness in how biblical law is followed. It seems that many feel picking and choosing which “laws” to implement is honoring religion.

Nowhere in the Bible does Jesus say “love thy heterosexual neighbor as thyself.” He says “thy neighbor as thyself,” with no condition as to who qualifies.

This is where I get confused regarding religion. Christian love can be very conditional and doesn’t seem to honor how Jesus loved everyone.

Nowhere in our state Constitution did it say that marriage is only for a man and a woman. To implement segregation of a certain group is coming from a hateful position. You are playing “us versus them,” and it is a dangerous game.

It was hateful when black people were not allowed the same rights as white people. How can anyone say that one person is better than another and should or should not be allowed certain rights? It is absolutely wrong, hurtful and hateful.

Gay men and women are in our communities — like it or not — and have been for hundreds of years. They are teachers, nurses, doctors, ministers, friends and relatives.

I have three family members who are gay and have been in committed relationships for years. Why shouldn’t they get to legally marry someone they love?

Heaven knows we heterosexuals have not done such a great job maintaining the “sanctity of marriage” — consider the divorce rate.

I choose to live my life with love for all. I don’t like the word “tolerance,” because it sounds too much like “putting up with.” I use the word “acceptance.”

When someone can logically point out to me how a gay person’s marriage will affect my heterosexual marriage, I will openly listen to them and honor their stance. Until then, I will maintain my belief that love is love with no conditions.

Whether it is for religious or legal reasons, every person should be allowed the same rights across the board, with no conditions.

Take a knee, Central

EDITOR,
After attending Friday night’s football game between Patterson High and Central Catholic, I was appalled at the Central Catholic coaching staff for not allowing its players to take a knee for an injured Tiger football player.

The lack of respect for a young, hurting individual shows that the Raiders’ coaching staff has no concern about his status as a human being. When one of Central’s players was injured, one of our coaches was the first to come to his aid to make sure he was not severely injured. Our team immediately took a knee until he was OK. Our fans even applauded when he walked off the field.

This should be every coach’s concern. These are young men playing for pride for their respective schools, but first and foremost, it should be about their health.

Every other team in the league takes a knee out of respect, no matter the intensity of the rivalry. I think the Central coaching staff needs to address this issue.

Someone needs to reprimand all of these coaches for their lack of respect and concern about an injured player, no matter what team they play for.

Central Catholic, being a religious organization, promotes faith and caring for your fellow man. It should continue in the sports world. The student body learns from these men who are role models for them.

What kind of image does Central Catholic want to promote? It should be one of team play, team concern, and respect for your fellow man.

I was disappointed and lost respect for that school’s coaching staff. I hope they can repair my disappointment in the future by reiterating what we are all here for.

West Park not amusing

EDITOR,
I would prefer to see the land set aside for the West Park project in Crows Landing used instead to build an amusement park, like Six Flags Marine World in Vallejo.

That way, the families of the Central Valley would not need to drive into the Bay Area for family entertainment. They would save money on gas, and sales tax dollars could go to the cities of Patterson and Crows Landing.

It would also create summer jobs for the kids in our community.

if you believe in the seperation of church and state then prop H8 is in clear violation of that. if you believe in the bill of rights prop8ganda stomps all over it.
the bible and it's teachings are personal choice of how one wants to walk in life and believe in. the bible does not lay out the law of the land and should not be carried out by our government.
i find it ironic in the pledge it states"and JUSTICE FOR ALL" how can one justify isolating another group of people how can we stand by and allow anothers libirties be taken away.
if you stand for nothing you fall for everything. who is to say something you do as a u.s. citizen is not next on their hit list! you can't believe in the right to privacy, the right to the pursuit of happiness, seperation of church and state for some people but not others.
im not even freakin gay or agree with the lifestyle but i bleieve in what the idea of u.s.a is! why should any of us care what adults do behind closed doors??? what is it too the rest of us? how dare some people feel b/c some book they believe in(which is their right) they have the duty to control what another groups does? i just dont get that..
it almost sounds like we live in the middle east where they have the moral police around every corner spying, judging, and punishing. if you think the radical religion pushers have stopped here..your sadly mistaken! they have a whole agenda and with enough money they can scare, smear distort, there way to see it through.
