Fans of Patterson High’s junior varsity football team could point to several plays in Friday’s 43-14 loss at home against Central Catholic to sum up the Tigers’ meager offensive output. But the bottom-line truth remains that if Patterson can’t find a way to score more than twice in a game against their Western Athletic Conference rivals, victories against the Raiders will remain tough to come by. “Momentum swung their way right from the get-go,” Patterson coach Steve Cardoso said. Patterson (7-2, 3-1 WAC) never found a rhythm offensively. The Tigers pieced together a productive ground game — racking up 162 yards — but struggled to get things going through the air. Central (8-1, 4-0), on the other hand, kept Patterson’s defense off-kilter with a balanced attack of power running and just enough timely short-yardage passes. ![]() catch and run: Patterson High freshman Rodney Lawson returns a kickoff against Central Catholic for the junior varsity team Friday night. Elias Funez/Patterson Irrigator “It’s tough against a team like Central,” Cardoso said. “They were able to sustain long drives and keep our offense off the field.” Central’s Craig Jones got the Raiders off and running, returning the game’s opening kickoff 74 yards for a touchdown. Jones punched in the 2-point conversion to give the Raiders an early 8-0 lead. Things didn’t get any better for Patterson on their first possession. Running back Efrim Jones fumbled the ball on the Tigers’ fifth play from scrimmage, halting a promising drive and setting the Raiders up at Patterson’s 41-yard line. Central took advantage of the turnover, eventually converting the opportunity into a 3-yard Chris Sales touchdown run. Jones trotted into the end zone for another 2-point conversion, putting the Raiders ahead 16-0. The Tigers rebounded with their most effective drive of the game. Patterson back Jimmy Guerrero (10 carries, 55 yards) anchored a nine-play, 85-yard drive with a 9-yard touchdown run. He later plowed through the Raiders’ goal-line defense for a 2-point conversion of his own, cutting the deficit in half, 16-8. “We got the ball back, and were able to put it in the end zone,” Cardoso said. “We just weren’t able to ever establish any type of rhythm.” Central devoured the remaining four minutes of the opening quarter, stretching its next possession into the second. Quarterback Dominic Ciccareli spotted an open receiver for a 6-yard touchdown strike, pushing the lead to 23-8. But the Raiders were just getting started. Jones (14 carries, 179 yards) scampered through the Tigers’ defense for two more touchdowns, and Central marched into the halftime with a 37-8 advantage. Central eased off of the throttle in the second half, and both teams played scoreless football in the third quarter. The Raiders scored again in the fourth quarter, however, on Darian Edwards’ 1-yard touchdown run. Patterson made the most of its final possession. With a little more than 4 minutes to play, the Tigers managed to move the ball 82 yards, ending the game with quarterback Cody Weinzheimer’s 19-yard touchdown run. Despite Friday’s loss, Cardoso is looking ahead to the Tigers’ final league test against Hilmar. “We’ve had a great season so far,” Cardoso said. “But we have another tough game against Hilmar. “We plan on finishing the season strong.” Contact Marc Aceves at 892-6187 or This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it
