Marisabel Carrillo and Maritza Vega finished fourth and eighth, respectively, helping the Patterson High girls cross country team place second at the frosh-soph Sac-Joaquin Section Division III Subsection meet Saturday in Angels Camp.

The Tigers finished with 52 points, 11 points behind first-place Sierra (42) in the 2-mile race. Carrillo finished the race in 14 minutes, 43 seconds. Vega finished with a time of 14:55.

The two runners will be joined by teammates Blanca Maldonado (15:01), Meghan Wraa (15:08), Tessa Gonzales (15:38) and Laura Thompson (18:40) at Saturday’s Sac-Joaquin Division III Section meet at Folsom High.

“There was some tough competition,” Patterson coach Dave Klein said. “What was encouraging was that the girls were a little upset over their performance.

“They will need to improve about an average of six seconds to beat Sierra.”

Melissa Vega, Maritza’s sister, was Patterson’s top finisher (55th, 22:34) in the girls 3-mile run. No Tigers advanced to sections in the race, but Claudia Trejo (28:17) and Erica Montes (30:39) recorded personal-best times.

Jack Relva will represent Patterson in Folsom thanks to his 10th place finish in the sophomore boys 2-mile race. Relva finished with a time of 12:22.

The Tigers’ top two finishers in the 3-mile race were Bryan Navarro (19:40) and Leonel Miranda (19:43), but neither will advance to sections.

“Overall, I was very pleased,” Klein said. “Everyone pushed each other, and these kids glued together very well.

“It was a total team effort, and everyone should take credit, from our fastest runners to our slowest. It was a lot of fun as well as a lot of work.”
