25 years ago — Nov. 10, 1983 City workers have completed installation of a memorial boulder in the downtown park in memory of Patrick Phillips, who died in 1973 while serving as Patterson’s mayor. Patterson High’s seven athletic teams competing in fall sports finished with 64 wins and only 13 defeats and were a combined 28-5 against Trans-Valley League opponents. The varsity volleyball team (17-3, 8-0 TVL) won the league crown for the fourth year in a row. And why do coach Sheryl Hefner and the Tigers have such success? Well, Patterson’s frosh-soph volleyballers have won five straight league titles while compiling a 70-4 record. During three of those seasons, the team went unbeaten under the coaching of Sandi Blair, who has mentored the young players the past four years. Patterson’s league-winning frosh-soph cross country team placed second in section competition at Angels Camp, led by Mike Hay’s victory in the race. Host Bret Harte won with 39 points, while the Tigers were close behind with 42. Dave Santos is the school’s cross country coach. 50 years ago — Nov. 6, 1958 Local voters generally followed statewide trends in Tuesday’s election, favoring Attorney General Pat Brown over Sen. William Knowland in the race for governor. A group of high school faculty members will challenge the Tigers’ varsity basketball team. Practicing for the faculty have been coach Jim Enochs, Ivan Larsen, Joel Evans, Francis Bettencourt, Charles Sprouse, Don Driscoll, Frank Azevedo, Frank Marshall, Bill Morgan and Ted Jackson. Using a surprise spread formation, the Tigers broke the Escalon jinx Friday night with a 26-0 victory. Beverly Terry was named football queen and Marie Broggi football mother of the year. 75 years ago — Nov. 10, 1933 Supervisor Frank Raines pulled a surprise when he slipped away to Reno and married Helena Barrett, former superintendent of nurses at the county hospital in Modesto. City Councilman R.J. Spooner has resigned. His appointment as a Federal Land Bank appraiser prohibits holding an elected position. The Del Puerto Cemetery Association is discussing the possibility of forming a cemetery district, whereby a small tax would be assessed for upkeep of the property. The Patterson High footballers travel to Hilmar this Friday. Their 4-1 league record trails only Hughson’s 5-0 mark. Hughson plays 4-1 Ceres this week. Irrigator archives
