Soccer coach Patty Garcia finally can check off “tournament championship” on her list of goals.

After five years of coaching in the Patterson Youth Soccer Association, her United under-19 girls soccer team won its first ever title at the Fresno Metro Halloween tournament last weekend at the Fresno Metro Sports Complex.

“I am not going to lie — I have had a monkey on my back,” Garcia said. “This group is the most talented team I have had.

“They play heartfelt soccer as a team, and that’s why they are champions.”

The tournament featured eight teams from all over Northern California.

United played near-perfect soccer for three games to earn a spot in finals. It defeated a strong team from Alameda 3-1 to seal top tournament honors.

“My girls never quit,” Garcia said. “They have soccer in their blood and they have a love for the game of futbol.”

Patterson was led by Jessica Herrera’s seven tournament goals. But several players also found the back of the net, including: Annie Easter (2), Adriana Araiza (2), Nina Arrigale (1), Yesica Cantero (1) and Brenda Castro (1).

Goalie Riley Fielder and defensive specialists Genesis Barraza and Valeria Ramirez also earned praise from their coach.

“These girls showed their muscle on every forward that was thrown their way,” Garcia said.
United had played most of its season shorthanded due to illness or injury.

“On Saturday, we had a solid 11 players,” Garcia said. “What a difference it made.

“My girls are now champions.”
