LIVINGSTON — Even a game on Halloween couldn’t mask the problems for Livingston’s defense.
The Patterson High junior varsity football team knocked off the host Wolves 29-0 on Friday, remaining undefeated in Western Athletic Conference play.

Largely on the legs of running backs Jimmy Guerrero (13 carries, 159 yards and three touchdowns) and Rodney Lawson (10 carries, 73 yards), Patterson rolled up 308 rushing yards, dominating the line of scrimmage.

“Our linemen did a great job today,” Guerrero said. “They opened huge holes for me and the rest of the team.”

Patterson’s running game made its presence known on the game’s opening drive. The Tigers devoured the first six minutes of the game, using a 13-play, 65-yard drive to set the tone and capitalized on a 5-yard Guerrero touchdown run.

“We make the holes, and our backs go through them,” Patterson offensive lineman Caleb Martinez said. “Our job is to make the backs look good.”

Patterson’s ensuing possession was another crawler. This time, the Tigers pieced together a 12-play scoring drive capped off by a 32-yard field goal courtesy of Guerrero. Patterson marched into halftime with a 10-0 lead.

“We’ve been able to run the ball all year long, and we didn’t change anything,” Patterson coach Steve Cardoso said. “Our five guys up front gave us a big push, and we ran the ball behind them all night long.”

The Tigers’ big blow came 5 minutes, 18 seconds into the third quarter, when Guerrero busted a 63-yard touchdown straight through the middle of the Wolves’ defensive line. Guerrero misfired on the extra point, but his team still enjoyed a 16-0 advantage.

Patterson’s Efrim Jones later intercepted a Livingston pass, setting the Tigers up at the Wolves’ 35 yard line. Guerrero struck again three plays later, streaking up the field for a 25-yard touchdown carry and a 22-0 lead.

“I was impressed with the way the team played, especially with the conditions being wet,” Cardoso said. “Nothing got in their heads, and they came out here and did their business.”

The Tigers managed one more scoring drive late in the fourth quarter, as running back Ryan Allen muscled his way past Livingston’s defenders for a 4-yard touchdown run to put the game away, 29-0.
After the win, the players’ thoughts quickly shifted to the upcoming clash with Central Catholic.

“I think that we are ready for Central mentally and physically,” Guerrero said. “We just need to play the way that we have been and we’ll be fine.”

Freshmen

The Tigers’ freshman team captured the league title — so to speak — with a 33-0 shellacking of Livingston at Patterson Community Stadium on Thursday.

Patterson won the only league game on its schedule using a combination of strong special teams play and a stifling defense to silence the Wolves.

“We play whoever (the schedule) puts in front of us,” Patterson coach Kenny Durham said. “We plan on staying focused on these last two games.”

Robert Marroquin and Zach Nelson each returned punts for touchdowns.

“I was pretty happy with the way everything was turning out,” Durham said.

Wesley Washington scooped up a Livingston fumble, returning it for a touchdown score of his own. Teammates Ricardo Ramirez and Frankie Sanchez each added a rushing touchdown.

“Going into the season, I didn’t really know what to expect,” Durham said. “Right now, the season is going a little better than I could have expected.”
