Boys soccer loses first league game Print E-mail

The Patterson High boys soccer team was perfect going into Thursday’s game, but it couldn’t overcome a solid goalkeeping performance and Livingston’s home-field advantage.

The Tigers dropped a 1-0 decision in the battle of Western Athletic Conference rivals Thursday in their first action since capturing the league crown earlier in the week.

Patterson (12-1-1 WAC) historically has trouble playing on smaller pitches, and more specifically, at Livingston, according to coach Greg Hartsell.

“We haven’t won in Livingston in about 3½ seasons,” Hartsell said. “We have more of a wide-open game, and we really have to adjust when we play on a small field like the one (Livingston) has.”

The Tigers were penned in Thursday by the Wolves and their 85-yard long pitch. The field at Patterson Community Stadium is about 35 yards longer by comparison, a world of difference for an up-tempo, finesse-style team like the Tigers.

“Livingston plays really well in those tight situations,” Hartsell said. “We just need more open space.”

Patterson fired off nine shots against Livingston’s goalie, who made every stop. Rodrigo Aldana led the Tigers with three shots, and Edgar Martinez managed two.

Patterson goalie Luis Torres was as perfect as his counterpart through the game’s first 75 minutes, turning away the first seven shots he saw. It was the lone goal he allowed — the result of a miscommunication — that made the difference.

“It’s hard to get up for a game when you know that you’ve already won league,” Hartsell said. “You’d almost rather be in a situation where you are actually fighting for something.”

Still, Hartsell hopes that his team can draw something positive from their loss.

“This lets the team know that we aren’t invincible,” he said. “I’d hate to go into the playoffs having our team thinking that they are unbeatable.

“Livingston is a good team. If we are going to have to lose to somebody, then I’d like it to be Livingston.”
