New fence planned for Patterson District Cemetery ![]() The chain-link fence surrounding the Patterson District Cemetery. Photo by Elias Funez/Patterson Irrigator Bryan Bingham, the cemetery’s general manager, said the cemetery district is in the early stages of fundraising for what will be a 1,500-foot wrought-iron fence along the front of the cemetery on Highway 33. The fence, which will replace the chain-link fence currently fronting the cemetery, will match the black wrought-iron gate that was installed in the spring. It will also include a second gate at the cemetery’s Highway 33 entrance, south of the first gate. The fence and the second gate will ultimately cost more than $100,000 to complete, and to help pay for it, the district is seeking donations from the community at the price of $700 per 10-foot section. Those who donate will likely have their names added to a donor board in the cemetery’s office, Bingham said. “I’d like to see it be pretty near completed by July, but that’s in pencil — nothing’s in pen,” he said. “With the economy right now, it’s hard to go around and panhandle for money on these things. A lot of people are hurting right now.” ![]() The chain-link fence surrounding the Patterson District Cemetery, above, will be replaced with wrought-iron to match the cemetery's main entrance. Photo by Elias Funez/Patterson Irrigator “There wasn’t enough money before to have a guy in my position,” Bingham said. “They’ve given me free (reign) to do what I see fit to improve the situation. “If you want the cemetery to look nice 20 years from now, you’ve got to plant trees today. We’ve got to get some of this stuff done.” That money will also help fund the cemetery’s expansion, once it becomes necessary. Bingham, who took over at the cemetery in June 2007, said there are 11 acres behind the cemetery that could be used for expansion when time comes. Eventually, Bingham said the plan will be to build a proper fence around the entire cemetery. But he said it doesn’t make sense to do it now, because no one knows exactly how much space will be needed in the future. For now, the goal is just to make the cemetery more attractive to visitors and passers-by. “We just want it to look nice,” Bingham said. “The chain-link fence, after about six months, attracts trash, and weeds grow up — it’s just an eyesore. It looks like a prison compound. “That’s not what we’re after. We want it to be aesthetically pleasing.” For information: Bryan Bingham, 892-8654.
