25 years ago — Sept. 16, 1982 Enrollment at the start of the school year in the Patterson Unified School District, at 1,936 students, is down nearly 60 students from a year ago. What started years ago as a 4-H animal project for his children has turned into a part-time hobby and occupation for Bill Walker. He raises the spotted variety of hogs and exhibits his prize animals at county fairs and Cal Expo, where this summer he had the Senior Champion and Grand Champion honors with “Wam Bam.” Patterson youngsters will for the first time play the sport of soccer, participating in a new league on the West Side. 50 years ago — Sept. 12, 1957 Walter Johnson, a pilot for Patterson Flying Service, walked away from a crash in the foothills near Westley with only minor scratches. The Patterson Parent-Teacher Association is starting a clothes closet to benefit needy families. Tony Leonardo, center on Patterson High’s football team, this week suffered a broken leg in practice. Work is progressing on Union Oil Company’s $900,000 pumping station on Oak Flat Road. 75 years ago — Sept. 16, 1932 Dick Bare of Modesto has purchased the Patterson Theater and will prepare it for opening as a talking picture house. The building was purchased from the Percy Harrison family, which formerly operated the theater. The business has been closed for some time. Del Puerto Canyon Road, for which Pattersonites have long sought improvements, may soon become a county road and be improved to handle traffic to a big camp this coming winter for the unemployed. Five Future Farmers of America members from Patterson High School attended the state fair last week. Alvin Ohlson and Manuel Mendes were FFA delegates, while Leslie Carlson, Albert Mortenson and John Spencer combined on a judging team. The high school has added a course in French to meet college requirements.
