25 years ago — Oct. 20, 1983 Patterson Frozen Foods founders Mario and Elfonso Ielmini have been honored as the Citizens of the Year by the Patterson-Westley Chamber of Commerce. Lodi Harrison and Clara Johnson will serve as grand marshals of this year’s Patterson High School homecoming parade. The varsity homecoming royalty will be Shelley Bradley, Theresa Hesling and Sheri Wilkinson, with the queen to be crowned as Friday night’s football game. The 1983 apricot crop is said to be “shockingly short” with only about 85,000 tons marketed. The canned pack of 42,000 tons was the lowest since 1943. Six Patterson High students have been selected to compete in this year’s countywide Academic Decathlon next month at Modesto Junior College. They are Ed Gonzalez, Esequiel Solorio, Anne Vizzolini, Kathy Housewright, Molly Black and Robert Ochoa. 50 years ago — Oct. 16, 1958 Ten farm laborers from Mexico and their foreman, Jack Rolling, were sickened by an organic phosphate dust being used on a local lettuce crop. The 10 were hospitalized. Pattersonite Elwood Schut plans to run for area director of 20-30 clubs. Marjorie Johnson is the new president of the Spanish Club at Patterson High. Bill Kelsay is the new head of the California Scholarship Federation. Mimi Bevis and Galen Schmidt will serve as co-presidents of the Methodist Youth Fellowship at the Federated Church. Football manager for this year’s Tiger team is Ken Truitt, who according to tradition was officially initiated Tuesday afternoon. Ken was treated to a cold shower. 75 years ago — Oct. 20, 1933 The economy may be in a downturn, but the local baby lima bean crop looks excellent, with some fields producing well over 20 sacks to the acre. Jack Grisez, who manages the warehouse in Westley, has more than 30 employed cleaning and handling the beans for shipment east. A federal conservation camp sought in Del Puerto Canyon has been turned down by the federal government. Instead, the camp will be used for county relief employment again this winter. Four new Boy Scouts joined the troop this week. They are Donald Ramon, Rex Jones, Bobby Watson and James Glotfelty.
