"We finally got it all together"

-Jennifer Hamm, PHS coach

ESCALON — Regardless of the opponent or the venue, there’s just no quitting in the Patterson High volleyball team.

Leading up to the start of league, comebacks factored heavily into two of Patterson’s four preseason wins, against Los Banos and Enochs of Modesto.

And while the Tigers couldn’t overcome a large deficit against Orestimba in their league opener Monday, they redeemed themselves Thursday night in a five-game marathon win against Central Catholic to emerge with a split week.

Against Central, Patterson captured the first game, 26-24, but dropped the next two, 25-12 and 25-17. The Tigers rallied to win Game 4, 25-6, and the final game, 15-10.

“We finally got it all together,” Patterson coach Jennifer Hamm said. “The girls came through, played really well and started playing the type of game they know how to play.”

Chelsea Taylor’s serving sparked the Tigers (5-6, 1-1 Western Athletic Conference) with nine aces. She set the table for her team’s outside hitters and middle blockers with 13 assists.

Jill Goubert controlled the net with eight kills and eight blocks, while back-row specialist Stacey Garibaldi contributed with 16 digs.

“We started off really strong, then all of a sudden we couldn’t get things back in sync,” Hamm said. “I told the girls that they’re the ones that had to get it together and put out the effort. Some of my big leaders really stepped up. They came through with a team effort.”

In their first home game at the newly renovated Patterson High gymnasium, the Tigers fell behind 10-2 to Orestimba in Game 1.

Reminiscent of the Los Banos and Enochs come-from-behind wins, however, Patterson rallied to tie the game at 22-22, before Orestimba knocked down an errant Patterson dig for the game-winning point, 25-23.

In Game 2, the Tigers opened up a 5-0 lead on strong serving from Taylor and eventually led 11-6.
But the Warriors reeled off 15 straight points to overtake Patterson, 21-12, and later win Game 2, 25-14.

In the closest game of the three-game match, Patterson and Orestimba shared seven ties down the stretch. Rebecca Freres had two big kills from the right block to keep the Tigers in the contest, but Orestimba came up bigger in a 30-28 Game 3 win.

“Orestimba beat us all three games last year,” Goubert said. “I think we wanted this game a lot more. We could have been quicker tonight. I think we wanted to do a lot better.”

Hamm said her squad would learn from the setback but wouldn’t put too much stock in just one loss.

“I told the girls to keep their head high and not to let one game get them down,” Hamm said. “It won’t determine our entire season. They wanted to do so well. Shelby Yamamoto got some good blocks, and Chelsea’s serving was on. We just played a really good team.”

Following a fifth-place finish at the Orestimba Tournament last weekend, the Patterson JV (6-8, 0-2) lost to Orestimba and Central. Manpreet Grewal had two kills, Stephanie Barraza had four digs and Amber Bond had three assists in the Central loss.

The freshman team hung with Orestimba before succumbing to the Warriors, 25-17, 25-16, on Tuesday. The Tigers lost to Central, 25-3, 25-6.

Patterson travels to Merced for the Golden Valley Tournament today. The team will return to league action Tuesday at Gustine.
