Council tackles retail list Print E-mail
Written by PI Staff
Friday, 17 October 2008

The city is about to kick off a marketing campaign to attract retailers to Patterson, and the City Council will decide which stores to pursue at its Tuesday meeting.

At the Oct. 6 meeting, the council received a list of 20 retailers that a hired marketing firm, Buxton Co., recommended. Wal-Mart, Home Depot and JC Penney were three of the 20 retailers that made the list. Now, the marketing firm plans to contact these companies in an effort to lure them to Patterson — but before they do the council will confirm that they want to pursue all 20 business.

The council hopes the additional stores will bring more sales tax revenue into the city.

The complete list: Applebee’s, Bath and Body Works, Fashion Bug, Finish Line, Hallmark, Home Depot, Iron Skillet, JC Penney, Jiffy Lube, Jo-Ann Fabrics and Crafts, Lowe’s, Maurice’s Gourmet BBQ, Meineke Car Care Center, Office Depot, Old Navy Clothing Co., Payless Shoe Source, Sears Roebuck & Co., Staples, United Artists Theater and Wal-Mart.

In other council matters
The council will review Measure S, a half-cent sales tax initiative to fund county transportation projects that will appear on the Nov. 4 ballot.

good grief, finally! too bad it took many people to leave patterson and an economic down turn to spur on change...an old navy would change things so much for the people of patterson.not to mention a certian portion of taxes stay here in patterson.it would mean no more going to tracy, modesto, turlock, for clothing. look forward to"change we need"
plus if we had an old navy that is something turlock does not have we could bring shoppers from surrounding cities.

Be Heard - Go to the Council Meeting.
written by Jeff Realini , October 20, 2008
I not sure how many of the current council member read the comments, but if you want to be heard go and speak at the council meeting tomorrow night. It is time for the Citizens to be heard. This is not just about what stores we will shop at, but the economic fitness of Patterson for the future. Realize that if the Irrigator has put Wal-Mart, Home Depot and JC Penney as the stores the council will be looking at, these are probably the ones the council has decided they want.

No Wal-Mart
written by cyano , October 20, 2008
Anything but a Wal-Mart! And, why does everything have to be the same as everywhere else? We are a unique town with a unique history and culture. We should be encouraging non-chain restaurants not the same kind of stuff you can get in any Boring City, USA. Let's really think outside the box, let's have the guts to be unique and different, and perhaps, a little better than anywhere else...

Another Valley Strip Mall
written by fred ross , October 20, 2008
Cyano has it right. Why do we insist on being what every other valley town is......tract homes and strip malls. We can do better. The cities in the valley that can create a niche, distinguishing themselves from the rest of the pack, will be the cities where quality of life prospers. Sorry folks, Applebees ain't gonna do it.

i hate apple bee's and any chain like it! i agree with the above comments our problem is sometimes unique stores want to make sure that the peoples icome in city will support it. unique means pricey sometimes..i feel maybe is patterson did not get same old chains but some hard to find chains like chik-fillet or ruby tuesdays maybe that would bring people here to eat or shop just for the factor it is not a ma*s chain like jamba juice, apple'bees,or fashion bug.

Fred Ross

Fred Ross,

It seems there is a segment of the population that believes being the next San Jose is the way to go. Funny how people who think that model is so great can't actually live in those areas.

Critical Ma*s - Patterson to San Jose Freeway
written by Jeff Realini , October 21, 2008
There is no mention anywhere on the time line for any of these retailers to open and no statement of understanding from any retailer they will even consider Patterson. While all of us would love a ..., until the population and income base can support it they will not come. This is like the freeway to San Jose. Impressive idea until you look at what it would take to accomplish it.
Plus we just burned $70K on a study. This could have been used as an incentive. While I want a Target and few other stores that I drive to Modesto for, I would settle for another sit down restaurant and a shoe store.

Patterson needs to get on board
written by How Sad , October 22, 2008
All this talk of new business is great, but every time a new shopping strip is put up, its the same old thing and most of the retailers that move in these strip centers, last one year and they are gone. It is sad that I hear alot of "shop Local" but the fact of the matter is, that three times here lately, I have gone out to almost every retailer in town looking for a spacific item and was not able to find it anywhere in town, and the retailers themselfs told me I would have to go to Modesto. We keep building homes, we better start thinking of services for these people we keep bringing in, such as a hospital and basic services . I am a 20 year business person in this town that deals with people, and the #1 complaint I hear day in and day out, is that there is nothing here for anyone to stay.

Last nights council meeting
written by Jeff Realini , October 22, 2008
I hate to say I think I was the only resident of Patterson not a*sociated with the developers. Nobddy on the council is going to take us seriosly until we show up to the meetings. This includes the business owners that will have to compete with WalMart. We will have to deal with homes for miles if we don't show up and voice our concerns, wants, and needs.
Sorry Ms.Bell, Diablo Grande is not Patterson, but your comments were good. A bookstore, independent or otherwise, would be a nice addition.

Bring us a Wal-Mart
written by Bert , October 22, 2008
We have nothing in town now. If a Wal-Mart or Target would come I would welcome it! Look at the Wal-Mart in Napa and Livermore. They are very nice stores. We need the tax revenue and we need something now. I have no problem that the council spent some money to help market Patterson. If we are able to land a Wal-Mart or Target it would be a huge benefit to the Cities tax base!

No on Wal-mart, yes on Target
written by cyano , October 22, 2008
If we care about the employees (citizens of Patterson who would be potential employees), we should NOT encourage a Wal-mart. Wal-mart gives their employees the lowest of wages, keeps employees as part-timers so they don't have to give them health benefits, etc. Yes, Wal-mart is cheap, but, PLEASE, think of the consequences if we allow such a store to come to our town. If you care about the quality of life here and acquiring a 'living wage' to people who live here, I'd encourage you to say 'no' to Wal-mart.

Anything but a "Walmart"...I agree with the majority of the comments above..Let's keep the integrity of the small town feel of Patterson, and bring in some unique stores...or another "Grocery" store, a skate & bike shop, shoe store, Ulta, etc....just my 2 cents.

written by Tired of driving out of town to shop! , October 22, 2008
I think it's possible to get a large retailer such as Wal-Mart or Target and still retain the small-town feel here. I hate having to leave town to do any major shopping, but the prices and selection in the stores here are a joke. I can't afford to shop here in town for everything I buy, so I make a trip into Modesto or Turlock once a week or so and just get everything I need all at once to save money. If there were more options here I'd be thrilled to do my shopping here in town and give Patterson my sales tax rather than a neighboring town. I feel the same way about the restaurants, although I didn't find any of those that made the list exciting. The movie theater would be great, though.
