"We picked it up on offense in the second half"

-Kenny Durham, PHS Coach

ESCALON — The cancellation of the Patterson High freshman football team’s season opener — a game that would have made the team the first football squad to play on the school’s new field — did little to quash the Tigers’ appetite.

Instead, the young Tigers took out their frustration on their next opponent with two first-quarter touchdowns and a stifling defense that eventually produced a 25-0 shutout of Escalon on Thursday on the road.

“Our team was pretty disappointed to not play last week,” Patterson coach Kenny Durham said. “I think the kids were really hungry (Thursday). They were pretty excited about playing, and it showed on the field.”

The season opener at Patterson Community Stadium was canceled by opponent Faith Christian Academy of Coalinga on late notice last week, delaying the team’s first game.

But the Tigers came out ready for action Thursday. Patterson scored on touchdown runs of 35 yards from Jimmy Guerrero and 3 yards from Efrim Jones to post a 12-0 first-quarter lead. They held that advantage through halftime.

In the third quarter, Patterson kept up the intensity with a scoring drive that culminated in quarterback Cody Weinzheimer’s 3-yard touchdown pass to Shaun Jackson for an 18-0 lead.

Weinzheimer later ran for a 37-yard touchdown to cap the scoring, 25-0.

“We picked it up on offense in the second half,” Durham said. “I thought the score should have been 40-0.”

Patterson’s defense came up big, as Cesar Gomez and Adrian Laurel each recorded two sacks. The Tigers also intercepted an Escalon pass.

“The defense was totally solid,” Durham said. “I don’t think Escalon had more than 70 yards total offense.”
