"The girls held their own...." -Dave Klein, Coach
Before the start of the season, Patterson High cross country coach Dave Klein figured the current crop of girls runners provided the Tigers’ best chance in years to compete for a league title. His hunch is proving accurate, as the Patterson girls took first place at the Western Athletic Conference preseason meet at Modesto’s Legion Park on Tuesday. “The girls held their own,” Klein said. “They ran pretty well. Once we get a couple more of our runners back, we’ll be pretty strong.” In unofficial mock scoring, the girls team finished with 32 points, ahead of Lodi’s Jim Elliot Christian, which finished in second with 41 points. Livingston was third with 47 points. Patterson had two of the top five runners in Amanda Moreno and Melissa Vega, who also ran distance events for the track team this past spring. ![]() Elias Funez / Patterson Irrigator Moreno nearly matched her 22-minute, 11-second finish at Saturday’s Sierra Invitational, also at Legion Park, with a first-place finish in 22:23. She defeated second-place finisher Heidi Hawthorn of Jim Elliot by 26 seconds. Vega ran the 3.1-mile race in 24:16, slower than her time of 23:38 at the Sierra Invitational, but still good for third place. Samantha Kramer and Linsey Moeller returned to the varsity ranks to finish back-to-back in 26:33 and 26:34, respectively. Vanessa Lazcano took 15th with a run of 29:14. Samantha’s older sister, varsity returner Kaelee Kramer, is slated to join the team for Patterson’s next race, as is Adriana Araisa. On the boys side, Eduardo Chin took third place in 19:12, while teammate Jorge Vazquez finished fifth in 19:46. Teammate Evan Bachelder wasn’t far behind in 21:18 for ninth place. Lance Michael, a returning varsity wrestler, was 10th with a time of 21:26. Art Hoxie finished in 22:32. Rounding out the varsity boys squad, Omar Cortez finished his first competitive race in 23:50. Tim Lee outhustled two other runners to finish in 30:15, and Nick Santillan crossed the finish line in 33:22. Soccer players Jose Cortez and Roger Cuestas didn’t run in Tuesday’s meet but should be back in action soon, Klein said. “The soccer players are our top four,” Klein said. “When we have Livingston at home Oct. 10, we’ll be without them, because they have a soccer game. That’ll be a huge match against Livingston.” In the 2-mile JV boys race, Jack Relva beat Orestimba’s Adam Trujillo by 26 seconds with a time of 13:24, beating out seven other boys runners. JV teammate Rafael Martinez ran to a 14:50 finish. Briana Cuen finished third in the 2-mile JV girls race in 17:42, a mark Klein called one of the team’s highlights. She was third among 12 JV runners. “Briana’s time was one of the brighter spots,” Klein said. “She’s improved quite a bit. That’s one of her best times.” Patterson’s next league meet will be Wednesday in Newman against Gustine and Orestimba, followed by the Frogtown Invitational on Sept. 22 in Angels Camp.
