Del Puerto Hotel owner Hazel Saylor has completed the hanging of nature paintings by artist Joe Maniaci, who painted them for the hotel in 1948. He recently completed a restoration of the framed panels.

Nearly an inch of rain pelted the West Side this past week, damaging the lima bean and tomato crops.

Crows Landing native Ruth Dihel, born in 1896, died this week at age 87.

“Super Students” chosen at the Grayson School for the month of September are Jose Perez, Sonia Suarez, Julie Reyna, Arsenio Mataka, Eric Garcia, Veronica Cortez, Prescilla Gonzalez, Corina Pinedo, Ruben Escobar and Yolanda Molina.

50 years ago — Oct. 2, 1958
Local firefighters will celebrate the 30th anniversary of the local department during Fire Prevention Week, and then cap it off with the annual firemen’s ball.

Arthur Stangeland has been appointed to the City Council to succeed Jim Terry, who has resigned.

Some 2,000 people enjoyed barbecued beef last Saturday, raising over $1,500 for the new Scout and Youth Building.

Ruth Azevedo is the new president of the Patterson 4-H Club.

Some 6,000 acres of rangeland burned this past week in the hills west of Patterson.

More than $100,000 in repair and maintenance work is scheduled for the Navy base at Crows Landing.

Don Richardson scored four times as the Patterson High football team dumped Hughson, 32-14.

75 years ago — Oct. 6, 1933
The county plans to purchase 480 acres in Del Puerto Canyon from Annie McDonald to house a crew of welfare relief workers who will improve the canyon road. The purchase price is $1,000, or about $2.10 per acre.

The second Horsethief Bend celebration, sponsored by the American Legion, was very successful but is not expected to net as large a profit as a year ago.

This week’s hot weather nearly equaled record highs. The mercury climbed to 94 on three different days and was above 90 on six out of seven days.

Patterson’s Elton Hamilton, now playing for the College of the Pacific in Stockton, booted a field goal to give his team a 3-0 victory over the U.C. Ramblers, the second string from Berkeley.

Meanwhile, the high school team trounced Hughson 39-0 to start league play. Glenn Hamilton ran for three scores and passed for two more. The 2-0 locals have outscored their opponents 86-0.

Roast beef sold this week for 10 cents a pound at the McConnell Market.
