Applause, not M-16s EDITOR, For all the promises of your extended Candidates Nights coverage, I am happy to say that I didn’t stay home on the couch and wait for your report. I attended the event and heard all the candidates for myself. What was missing from your article in the Sept. 24 issue is this main fact: Councilwoman Annette Smith was the only candidate to receive multiple rounds of applause from the audience, because her answers were right on and showed the much-needed experience that Patterson needs to take us into the future. The most frightening moment of the evening was when mayoral candidate Luis Molina stated, and I quote: “We need to take up — like it or not — our M-16s and go down (to the elected officials) and raise hell and ask the questions that need to be asked.” Is he serious? Apparently he doesn’t keep up with national news. In February 2008 in Kirkwood, Miss., someone did just that, killing city officials, police officers, council members and the mayor! An educated man doesn’t need a gun — a truly educated man can bring resolution to problems without violence or militant threats. Ramona Casado, Patterson Stop the corporate lies EDITOR, The federal bailout is a bunch of bunk. An alternative to consider is nationalizing the Federal Reserve — no private company should hold Congress hostage and terrorize elected officials and continue to place “we the people” in debt. Congress needs to take back its power. It created the Federal Reserve, and Congress has the power to modify it or get rid of it. Chairman Ben Bernanke did not cry wolf very loud, and he should have been screaming his guts out — he wasn’t and he didn’t. It was more like — “Oh well, looks like I print more paper.” I’d say in plain English, get a handle on this now before it turns into a disaster. It did, and he didn’t. Furthermore, Wall Street will make money on this bailout, then turn around and make money on the upswing caused by the bailout — next, the thieves will hit the commodities markets, raising food and energy prices. They’ll want a bailout. Enough is enough! Poor people are bailing out the rich to make them richer. The good ol’ boys have to take in the shorts and own up like everyone else is forced to do. Change corporate law. In this country, corporations have more rights than a human being — which is totally and absolutely wrong, absurd and illogical. We are a government of the people, by the people and for the people, not of, by and for the corporations. We don’t service Wall Street, they service us. This presidential administration promoted that corporations can “police” themselves? It is obvious they cannot. In the 1980s, when Lee Iacoca, then CEO of Chrysler, asked for a government bailout, he got it — he also took no compensation. Chrysler paid back that loan with interest. That took leadership, character, chutzpah and teamwork, something we lack on Wall Street, in corporate America and in our government. This whole situation reeks of greed and cronyism. The administration lied to us on Iraq, and now we are supposed to believe this? Stop lying to me. Donna Miller, Patterson A Republican in Democratic clothing EDITOR, Beware of the Bill Berryhill supporters contacting you and falsely claiming that Berryhill is a Democrat. These supporters want you to put a sign up that reads “Democrats for Berryhill.” Berryhill is a Republican, and his supporters are trying to trick people into believing he is a Democrat. John Eisenhut is the real Democratic candidate for California’s 26th Assembly District. We want an honest and open campaign. Both campaigns have the right to seek voters, but neither should use deception. Don’t fall for this dishonest tactic. It happened to us — don’t let it happen to you! It will be nice to get fresh air in the mayor's office. At this forum night I saw someone with an "done that, been there" attitude that took alot of credit for the good things that were discussed at the forum. Remember..it takes more than just one person to make things happen. And ALL should be given the credit.
