25 years ago — Sept. 22, 1983 In June, the Department of Motor Vehicles discontinued twice-a-month service in Newman, and then dropped Patterson service in August. Now at the urging of state Senator Dan McCorquodale, Newman service is being restored. Local firefighters have not been called out by a loud horn for a few years, but the horn has been sounded at 5 p.m. as a public service, compliments of D&B Answering Service operator Betty Emmons. The horn will be taken down to make way for Ossie Street. Both Sammy DeLaRosa and Robert Lopez topped 100 rushing yards as the Patterson High football team blasted Orestimba 27-7 to go 2-0. 50 years ago — Sept. 18, 1958 The West Side Cooling Co. plans to begin shipping lettuce in about a week. Some 1,500 acres of the leafy green are being grown in this area. The City Council is weighing a proposed ordinance that would disallow burning barrels within the city limits. New dressing rooms will next be constructed, as renovation of the high school’s swimming pool continues. A 1-pound can of Hills Brothers coffee was selling for 69 cents this week at Liberty Super Market. 75 years ago — Sept. 22, 1933 The recent National Recovery Act movement has netted a slight gain in employment here, according to local chairman F.S. Harrison. The gain was 23, with 15 of those being at the Libby plant. Mrs. E.E. Wellemeyer is beginning her annual twice-a-week Americanization classes for those who want to become U.S. citizens. Patterson High’s football team traveled to take on Modesto High this week and came home with a rousing 47-0 decision. However, the Modesto coach played mostly reserves. The local J.C. Penney store is selling sheep-lined boys coats for $2.49, offering them for 50 cents down and 50 cents a week.
