The field will be dedicated Friday night, before the football team’s home opener. ![]() Elias Funez / Patterson Irrigator Not only will the Tigers face small-school powerhouse Escalon, but Patterson Community Stadium and its newly installed FieldTurf will be dedicated before the varsity game. Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m. Administrators from Patterson High School and Patterson Unified School District will be on hand for a pre-game ceremony. The family of Patterson football coach Rob Cozart, who spearheaded the Patterson Community Stadium renovation project, will be recognized during the ceremony. Service clubs that contributed toward the replacement of home seating also will be honored. Those are Patterson Rotary Club, Patterson Lions Club, Patterson Gridiron Club, Patterson Athletic Boosters and the Patterson Redskins youth football program. Local business and individual contributors also will be recognized. Extra bleachers will be set up for an expected overflow crowd. Facing Escalon at home will be no small task for All-Western Athletic Conference running back and linebacker Keith Yamamoto, who recalls beating the vaunted Cougars in the Trans-Valley League two years ago, 24-21. “When I was a sophomore, we beat them in league for the first time in quite a while,” Yamamoto said. “Even though they’re not in our league now, it means a lot to us, in the players’ eyes, when they come to town.” Though Patterson won its season opener against Immanuel, Cozart said there’s plenty of room for improvement in the Tigers’ attack. “At individual positions, we need to get better,” Cozart said. “We just need some work. There are individual positions that need to be retooled. We’ll learn from our miscues and make some adjustments. We got to bring our A-game against Escalon.” Patterson lost to Escalon, 18-14, in 2006, after the 2005 victory, the school’s first win against the Cougars since the late 1990s. Longtime Escalon coach Mark Loureiro heads a program that went 10-2 in 2006. Its only losses were 28-20 to Modesto Christian and 42-23 to Central Catholic, the same two teams the Tigers lost to last year. “We know Escalon is here to play,” Yamamoto said. “We just want to get the job done, get those bragging rights and then look forward to the next week.” To reach Play Editor Mike Vanden Bosch at the Irrigator, call 892-6187 or e-mail him at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it
