25 years ago — Sept. 15, 1983
Wendy Poot, 15-year-old daughter of Leonard and Elsie Poot, has won the national poppy poster contest sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary. The selection was made at the organization’s annual convention in Seattle.

Joyce Ielmini has been tapped to chair next year’s combined Patterson Diamond Jubilee and Apricot Fiesta celebration.

A group of 11 Canadian youths, participating in an exchange program, helped clean weeds and debris from Salado Creek this past week.

Patterson High’s volleyball team won its own tournament for the fourth straight year, this time posting four wins and never allowing more than eight points in a 15-point set.

Pattersonites Alice Lucich and Brett Hammon took singles honors in last weekend’s Newman Fall Festival tennis tournament.

50 years ago — Sept. 11, 1958
John Grischott of Westley, first assistant fire chief in that community, has been nominated for the Stanislaus County Fireman of the Year award.

The Patterson softball team lost to Winton in the championship double-elimination tournament in Gustine. Manuel Silva hurled an extra-inning loss Thursday, while Rich Mendonca was on the hill and took a 5-4 defeat Friday.

Coach Dean Shafer this fall has his heaviest team ever, as the Tiger varsity gridders average 177 pounds each.

Hospital directors Albert Bevis and Walter Hector are unopposed in November’s election.

The upcoming community deep-pit barbecue to benefit the new Scout and Youth Building will offer 1,500 pounds of beef at $1 a plate for adults and 50 cents for children.

75 years ago — Sept. 15, 1933

Six blocks of streets between the Las Palmas and Northmead schools were this week authorized by the City County to be re-oiled, and the county crew went right to work the next morning.

Ditchtenders and pump operators employed by the Patterson Water Co. have been given a week off without pay. Group insurance for employees also was dropped in a budgetary cut.

Stanislaus County this week formally turned over the West Side Highway to the state.

High school registration was 202 this week.

Elm Avenue rancher Joe Perreira was injured last Sunday in a Portuguese bullfight in Stockton, one in which the crowd joins the merriment. He was knocked down by the bull.
