A rebuttal to revisionism

EDITOR,
If it’s proper to rebut a so-called whimsical column entitled “Perspectives,” then I must.

The column which appeared on Aug. 9 (“A revisionist look at the Christian nation”) questioned the Christianity of our nation. I thought we lived in a pagan nation started with Christian ideals run amuck by the freedom of choice that we enjoy.

Scott McKinley refers to the Constitution and the men endorsing it, but I call your attention to a document many of them signed 11 years earlier, with four references to some kind of god-like power, even appealing to “the supreme judge of the world for the rectitude of our intentions.”

The men signing this document, the Declaration of Independence, were signing away their public and personal lives to a war they could not win.

McKinley states that they had Christian-negative quotes in their private letters. I don’t know anyone who would sign their life away to a cause that was insurmountable, trusting in a God they did not love. And if it’s just Christ they did not love, then who were they referring to in the declaration?

America is a mixing pot of everything, and freedom of choice is a gift from God. Could it be that those cynical about Christianity are really disgusted with so-called Christians, but publicly voice their favor or despair about Christianity as a whole?

I submit the above with an open mind.

No more money for schools

EDITOR,
How much do we have to pay for bonds? I already pay $600 with my property taxes and extra for school bonds, fire district and ambulance fees. Where is all that money? Why the need for more?

I’m going to vote no on the upcoming school bond measure, that’s for sure.

Declaration of Independence
written by Scott McKinley , September 02, 2008
The Declaration of Independence was written to rally the colonists to keep supporting the Revolution War that had begun a year earlier. The language was designed to appeal to people to justify independence. It used religious wording to do so. However, Jefferson used Deist termonology like "Nature's God" and "Creator" instead of Christian termonology like "God" or "Jesus."
