The Stanislaus County coroner’s office announced Wednesday that Patterson Planning Commissioner Jim McCluskey died due to blunt force trauma from a bicycle accident on Sunday and that his death was an accident. McCluskey, 55, was cycling east on Diablo Grande Parkway when he veered into the road and was struck by an eastbound motorcycle, according to reports from the California Highway Patrol. It is unclear why McCluskey veered into the roadway. People that knew him described him as an experienced biker who was very familiar with the area. They said he would often bike Diablo Grande Parkway to get to the Diablo Grande clubhouse. Some friends suspected that a medical condition, such as a heart attack, could have caused McCluskey to steer erratically. The coroner’s report doesn’t rule out that possibility, but investigators did not find any evidence to suggest he was having a medical emergency. The CHP is continuing its investigation of the accident. The investigation is not expected to be completed for at least two months. McCluskey had served on Patterson Planning Commission since 1993. It was likely that he would have been appointed to another two-year term at Tuesday’s City Council meeting. Mayor Becky Campo said the council would start interviewing people to fill the vacancy in the coming weeks. McCluskey had been commission’s chair. Vice-chair Duvahn Ferreira will assume that position.
