LOOKING OUT: Deputies stopped about 800 cars Friday and Saturday during a checkpoint at East Las Palmas and Sycamore avenues in front of New Hope Church. Police arrested one person on suspicion of drunken driving and towed 19 cars for either being unregistered or for having an unlicensed driver. Six deputies manned the checkpoints for close to four hours Friday and Saturday evenings. The checkpoints were funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety. Deputies believe the last Patterson checkpoint happened close to 10 years ago. However, Patterson Police Services expects the local checkpoints to become a more common experience. At left, Stanislaus County Sheriff’s deputies check drivers licenses on Friday.
