Updated 3:05 p.m., Aug. 05 Three people were killed — including a 3-year-old boy from Westley — and one suffered major injuries in a fiery head-on collision on Highway 33 late Monday night, the California Highway Patrol reported Tuesday. ![]() A CalTrans worker replaces a damaged railroad sign Tuesday morning near the scene of Monday's accident on Highway 33, south of Rogers Road. After the collision, the Mazda came to rest on the east shoulder of Highway 33 and was consumed in flames. The Blazer overturned and came to rest on its wheels on the west shoulder. The driver of the Mazda, a 27-year-old Westley woman, was killed in the collision — as was her passenger, the 3-year-old boy. The driver of the Blazer was also killed. His passenger, a 43-year-old man from Patterson, suffered major injuries and was taken by helicopter to Doctors Medical Center in Modesto, according to CHP spokesman Tom Killian. His condition was not known as of Tuesday morning, and Killian said the man had no identification. A representative with the Stanislaus County coroner’s office said Tuesday afternoon that the bodies had not all been positively identified yet, and no names would be released until all three were identified and all the families had been notified. According to Patterson fire chief Jeff Gregory, who was on the scene along with 12 members of the Patterson Fire Department and eight from the Westley Fire Department, the spot where the accident occurred is not particularly unsafe. The accident happened just south of an S-curve over railroad tracks near the Patterson District Cemetary. “There’s no more accidents there than anywhere else,” Gregory said. It is unknown whether alcohol played a role in the accident. The accident was the third with at least one fatality in the past three weeks in the Patterson-Westley area. On July 15, seven people — six farm laborers from Lodi and the driver of a septic truck — died when two vehicles collided and plunged into the Delta-Mendota Canal at Needham Road. Their bodies were later recovered from the canal. Two days later, an 89-year-old Patterson woman died after a two-car crash at Sperry and Del Puerto avenues. Also, on July 19, a 54-year-old Patterson woman suffered a severed foot when she was hit head-on on Highway 33 near Ward Avenue.
