Patterson High School’s graduation rate of 84.8 percent came in well ahead of Stanislaus County’s graduation rate of 76.5 percent and the state’s 79.5 percent rate when the California Department of Education released a new report Tuesday. A couple of weeks ago, the state released the dropout rates of California high schools, rates that were compiled using data from new student identification numbers that track students through school and where they go when they leave school. That data was an estimate of dropouts over a four-year period based on single-year data from 2006-07, with corrections from local districts due back to state officials in a month. The new data system gives each student an identifying number and follows his or her progress through school years. Administrators can tell if a student graduated, dropped out, changed schools, left the state, withdrew from school, died or completed his or her education in other ways by reviewing the data numbers. The data for students who went on to adult education high schools to complete their studies or who took the California High School Proficiency Exam were not included in this latest report because they didn’t graduate from high school. After the data system is in place for four years, the rates for gradation and dropouts will be more accurate. Locally, the Patterson Unified School District has a number of programs for student academic help from elementary through high school, giving one-on-one teacher help to those who need it. Other programs focus on creating an easier transition to high school, character building and community service.
