TURLOCK — Early Sunday morning, when many people in Patterson were asleep, Vernalis and Patterson 4-H members traveled to the county fair in Turlock with their animals. ![]() Photo by Elias Funez / Patterson Irrigator The livestock barns at the fairgrounds were abuzz with activity as 4-H’ers from throughout the county, along with local kids and parents, weighed, washed, brushed and fed their animals — sheep, dairy cows, beef cows, goats, rabbits and pigs. ![]() Photo by Elias Funez / Patterson Irrigator For most folks, like the Fisks of Vernalis, it really was a family affair. Colleena Fisk helped her three daughters, Michaela and Natasha, both 16, and Marissa, 13, put 15 sheep in the livestock pens. “We used to have other animals — replacement heifers and beef cattle,” said Michaela, who, with Natasha, was in New Jerusalem 4-H for eight years. ![]() Photo by Elias Funez / Patterson Irrigator This year, the Fisks have sheep, most of which will make the trip back home. Only three sheep are slated to go to auction Saturday. Nancy Sill, Patterson 4-H sheep leader, said 10 of the group’s 11 animals at the fair this year will go to auction. ![]() Photo by Elias Funez / Patterson Irrigator Meanwhile, Andrea Adams, who teaches agriculture at Patterson High, said everything is going well for the first-year FFA students who have sheep. FFA members also have beef cows, dairy cows, pigs, rabbits and a duck. ![]() Photo by Elias Funez / Patterson Irrigator “We had quite a turnout this year,” Adams said. Patterson High junior Kristina Alaniz, 15, said she wanted to be in FFA because she thought it would be fun. ![]() Photo by Elias Funez / Patterson Irrigator “Miss Adams made it sound fun and exciting,” Kristina said. “It is an adventure.” ![]() Photo by Elias Funez / Patterson Irrigator Kristina and her friend, 15-year-old Patterson sophomore Lauren Schryber, were both fine with their animals going to auction. ![]() Photo by Elias Funez / Patterson Irrigator Stephanie Barraza, a 14-year-old Patterson sophomore, said she is also fine with her sheep, Melvin, going to market. “I live on a farm,” Stephanie said. “I thought raising a lamb would be fun and a new experience for me. It’s good. It’s tight.”
