Patterson resident Marilyn Hoobler recently won $1,000 from Starbucks after filling out a customer satisfaction survey at the Rogers Road store a few months ago. At first, Hoobler did not trust the phone call from the company’s representative at Marden-Kane Inc., a company that handles Starbucks’ sweepstakes prizes. “I was very leery when she originally contacted me,” Hoobler said, adding that the paperwork she received did not have a Starbucks logo on it. When Hoobler phoned Starbucks’ corporate offices, however, a representative there verified that she had indeed won the money. Hoobler filled out the forms, had them notarized and awaited the check. The money arrived July 12 and is already earmarked for her daughter Lauren’s upcoming wedding in the fall. Patterson police Chief Tyrone Spencer said Hoobler took all the right steps to avoid being the victim of a scam. “In a case where you can independently verify that it’s a legitimate contest or giveaway, there’s no cause for alarm,” Spencer said. “Always verify, but do not call back on the number they give you.” Spencer said that in some scams, the caller gives a phone number where a partner or partners are waiting to answer and falsely verify the scam. “The issue is you should never have to send money in order to get money,” Spencer said. “For example, if they say you have won $50,000, but in order to get it you have to pay the $2,000 up front — some type of taxes or processing fee — to get the balance of the rest of the money, these are sure signs of a scam.” To reach Maddy Houk at the Irrigator, call 892-6187.
