“We knew that we were going to be one of the smaller teams, but we also wanted to raise our level of competition. This season, we did just that.” — Lauren Cozart Patterson Pirates swim coach Another summer season has come to a close for the Patterson Pirates swim team. And looking back on its accomplishments and its continued rise in numbers this summer, head coach Lauren Cozart says the club’s future is as bright as ever. “This is only our second season and our first in this league,” Cozart said. “We knew that we were going to be one of the smaller teams, but we also wanted to raise our level of competition. This season, we did just that.” Patterson took another important step Saturday at the season-ending Mid-Valley Swim League West Championship at Ripon High School. The club finished fourth in a field of four teams in the overall competition across seven age groups. Highlight performances from Patterson standouts such as Montana Bigelow, Amaya Nelson, Victoria Garcia, Mahalla Fagan-Mann and Madeline Martinez helped the Pirates to a strong showing in the 7-8 and 9-10 divisions, which tallied more than half of the team’s final point totals. Cozart cautioned that this should not be interpreted to mean the club is struggling in other age groups. The team of Danica Cook, Samantha Rodriguez, Kaitlyn Navarro and Victoria Garcia shaved 12 seconds off of their previous best time in the 9-10 girls 200-yard freestyle relay to finish fourth Saturday. Other notable performances came from 11-12 swimmers Brooke Garro and Max Rodriguez. The two finished with personal-best times of 31.68 and 43.84 seconds in the 50 freestyle, respectively. The championship was claimed by the Tracy Tritons Swim Club, the league’s largest team by a wide margin. The Patterson Swim Club’s numbers may never catch Tracy’s, but Cozart said this year marked another small increase as the club’s membership steadily grows. “The pool is becoming a community activities spotlight,” Cozart said. “This team is an avenue for athletes of all skill levels.” To reach Marc Aceves at the Irrigator, call 892-6187 or e-mail him at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it
