25 years ago — July 21, 1983 Money from the discontinued Friends of the Pool fund will be used to erect eight benches in the downtown area. They will be erected in memory of the late Dorothy Harrison. Patterson’s public works director, Ernie Garza, is leaving for a position with the city of Atwater. Civilian Conservation Corps members will soon clear West Side creek beds of weeds and debris, county Supervisor Sal Canella has announced. Work is beginning in earnest on next year’s Diamond Jubilee, the community’s 75th anniversary. Vee Hooper has announced her intention of becoming a candidate for the local school board. Patterson’s summer swimming program, slated to use the pool at the Crows Landing Naval Base, has not yet commenced, because of a lack of a lifeguard. The city has already paid a part of the $5,000 cost to resurface the pool. 50 years ago — July 17, 1958 With only 89 voting out of a possible 931, the formation of the Patterson Soil Conservation District passed by a 79-7 count. New directors include T.C. Dailey Jr., Lester Gustafson, John Nunes Jr., Joe Smith Jr. and H.V. Thorkelson. Ernie Rose of Patterson won his fifth National Class B runabout title in weekend boat racing on Lake Yosemite. He lost the first heat by three seconds but posted a wider margin of victory in the second heat to claim the title. Local contractor John Delphia was the low bidder on a major job that will widen Highway 101 between Soledad and Gonzales to four lanes. The Lewis Washburn family, including sons Ray and Gary, has returned from a two-week vacation in British Columbia. Lawrence Walther has opened a law office in Patterson and plans to move from Gustine. Dick Heitman is the new chairman of the high school Board of Trustees. 75 years ago — July 21, 1933 Jess White, assistant foreman at El Solyo Ranch in the Vernalis area, is credited with saving five people from Walnut Creek. They were caught in a treacherous San Joaquin River whirlpool near the intake of the El Solyo irrigation system. In turn, the exhausted White had to be rescued by his wife. A sale date will be set soon for nearly 800 vacant lots within the city. The Patterson Ranch Co. owns most of the lots and is delinquent on its property taxes. Patterson’s newest organization, the Universal Stamp Club, has quickly grown to 53 members. They meet Wednesdays in the library. Postmaster W.F. Hanell is sponsoring the club. Picnic hams are 14 cents a pound this week at the McConnell Market. Billy Bullwinkle is the new pro at the Patterson Golf Club. He hopes to build a pro shop at the course near the river. Local temperature highs have been above 100 in nine of the past 10 days, hitting 109 on July 11.
