Locals packed the newly opened Mandarin House Restaurant on Monday morning and welcomed owners Sam and Tracy Luo.

The Luos and their family have spent three months painting and prepping the restaurant and are getting to know Patterson and many of its residents.

“I like Patterson,” Sam Luo said. “I’ve made a lot of friends already.”

The Luos purchased the former Lam’s Paradise Café, 36 S. Third St., from Carol Wong, who owned the establishment with her late husband, George, for 28 years until March.

The Luos owned the Garden of Tapestry Chinese Restaurant in San Francisco for 17 years, where they served Mandarin- and Cantonese-style dishes.

Former owner Carol Wong was on hand Monday and welcomed customers who came through the door. She said she was thrilled with the first-day turnout.

“I am happy for them,” Wong said.

Local resident Sara Smith, who took a seat at the restaurant Monday, said she first visited the previous eatery 24 years ago with the Rev. Tom Cargo of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

“Carol and George were our neighbors, and we became close friends,” Smith said. “We’ve been coming here ever since.”

Georgia Gama, a waitress for the Wongs for many years, was on the job Monday.

“I’m so glad that we’re back,” Gama said.

Local man Carlos Perez met the Wongs when he worked at Westside Cleaners many years ago. The Wongs had a business in Crows Landing at that time.

Perez has been a friend ever since, and he said he was impressed with the revamped eatery.

“The remodel is extremely beautiful from what they had before,” Perez said. “I come here every day for a cup of coffee, and sometimes I come in for lunch.”

Mandarin House is open from 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. for dine-in or take-out. Lunch specials are available from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Mandarin House also prepares party trays and caters large and small events.
