An 89-year-old Patterson woman died Thursday after a two-car crash at Sperry and Del Puerto avenues.

Helen Wright, who lived in Las Palmas Mobile Estates, died at Doctors Medical Center in Modesto after being taken from the accident scene by an ambulance, according to Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department.

The crash happened at about 12:20 p.m. when Wright, who had been traveling east on Sperry Avenue, tried to turn left onto Del Puerto Avenue through oncoming traffic, according to a witness.

As she crossed the westbound lane, the front of her Chevrolet Spectrum collided with the front end of a Dodge Intrepid traveling west through the intersection, a passenger in the Intrepid said.

“We had a green light and were going through the intersection,” said Melissa Ortiz, who had been in the Intrepid with her baby son and the driver. “Then, she turned.”

The force of the collision caused both vehicles to spin 180 degrees.

Police blocked off Sperry Avenue between Ninth Street and Fourth Street while they investigated and cleared the scene.

Ortiz said she felt sore after the crash, and the two other people in the car appeared to be unhurt.

There were no passengers in Wright’s car.

Wright’s neighbors found out about her death shortly after the accident.

“She was the most wonderful neighbor I had in my whole life,” said Mary Kilmer, who lived next to Wright for 10 years.

“She was a quiet, special woman,” said Vera Bettencourt, who had also been a longtime neighbor of Wright. “She never had a bad word to say about anyone.”

Kilmer suspected something was wrong when she didn’t see Wright’s car at her house.

“I talked to her just this morning,” she said Thursday. “When I got back home and she wasn’t home yet, I couldn’t figure it out. Then, her daughter called."
