An 89-year-old Patterson woman died Thursday after a two-car crash at Sperry and Del Puerto avenues. Helen Wright died at Doctors Medical Center in Modesto after being taken from the accident scene by an ambulance, according to Patterson Police Services and the Stanislaus County coroner's office. The crash happened at about 12:20 p.m. when Wright, who had been traveling east on Sperry Avenue, tried to turn left onto Del Puerto Avenue through oncoming traffic. As she crossed the westbound lane, the front of her Chevrolet Spectrum collided with the front end of a Dodge Intrepid traveling west through the intersection, according to a passenger in the Intrepid. “We had a green light and were going through the intersection,” said Melissa Ortiz, who had been in the Intrepid with her baby son and the driver. “Then, she turned.” The force of the collision caused both vehicles to spin 180 degrees. Police blocked off Sperry Avenue between Ninth Street and Fourth Street while they investigated and cleared the scene. Ortiz said she felt sore after the crash, and the two other people in the car appeared to be unhurt. There were no passenger's in Wright's car.

Thats nice that the city is building a 500k skate park. When do they plan on updating their dangerous intersections by adding turn lanes? This intersection has always been bad for people making left turns, and now deadly.

I believe the cause of the crash was a red light that was ran, even if there was a turn lane it wouldn't of mattered in this case. If this was a crash where somebody was rear-ended it would be a different story. We are a city of 20+ thousand with not much recreation besides a pool....we have a bad problem with kids overting to other activities when recreation isn't available. I think the 500K for the scate park is a great idea. Now if you said we should of not installed the extra round abouts around town in order to use the money collected from DMV fee's towards a better cause I'd totally agree.

How about NOTHING! The lady who died might have suffered from a medical problem when the accident occured. There is nothing wrong with the intersection, I travel it all the time. It's like Kevin says..." I believe the cause of the crash was a red light that was ran" . People make mistakes. This accident is a tradgedy, it shouldn't be used to complain about your taxes or how they are spent. Again, Kevin is correct,"We are a city of 20+ thousand with not much recreation besides a pool....we have a bad problem with kids overting to other activities when recreation isn't available." Who cares if it's a scate park or water feature park so long as they are using the money in the right way to improve the Town like we need. Again, that intersection is signaled and works fine, this was an accident plain & simple. People have to pay attention and follow the rules of the road.
