Rescuers recovered the body of a woman from the Delta-Mendota canal today around noon.

Authorities said the woman, Adriana Garcia, of Lodi, had been in Tuesday's car accident that killed seven people.

Garcia's body was discovered about 10 to 15 miles south of the scene of the accident, near Bell Road east of Interstate 5.

Authorities have identified five other victims, four from Lodi, who died in the crash. Family members have identified the last victim, whose body has not been found, as a Lodi man. All of the six family members were in the same vehicle.

The seventh victim is from Merced and was driving a septic truck.

The Lodi residents were in a Ford Explorer that collided with the septic truck shortly after noon Tuesday near the town of Westley. California Highway Patrol officials said this morning that they believe the Ford ran a stop sign while heading north on a road that runs along the canal. The truck was headed west on Needham Road and crashed into the SUV. The collision sent both vehicles through guardrails on a bridge spanning the canal.

Rescuers spent hours trying to retrieve the vehicles from the canal, which is 20 to 30 feet deep. The Stanislaus County Coroner's Office identified the victims that were found inside the vehicles as:

  • Eulalia Garcia, 34, of Lodi. Family members at the scene said she was the driver of a red sport-utility vehicle.
  • Isaac Tapia, 16, of Lodi.
  • Adan Martinez, 22, of Lodi.
  • Elizar Cruz, 19, of Lodi.
  • Luis Perez, 45, of Merced. He was driving the septic truck and was the sole occupant of the vehicle.

Relatives of the Lodi victims believed two more people were also in the sport-utility vehicle and identified them as Adriana Garcia and Lucas Martinez.

The SUV was heading back to Lodi after the occupants had spent the morning picking peaches in an orchard about 50 minutes from Lodi.

Law enforcement divers pulled the septic truck and driver from the water Tuesday evening. They retrieved the SUV at 10 p.m. and found four bodies inside.

Autopsies are being performed today, according to the Coroner's Office.
