Guest speaker offers youth soccer insight ![]() Karl Dewazien Dewazien discussed the psychology of coaching and how to organize soccer practices, while offering drills for player development and giving fundamental technical information to pass along to youth players. He wants to develop and improve the level of soccer in the local community, and he said it is key to give parents and coaches the proper support and help. “If the parents and coaches are doing the right things at practice, then this can only help the children develop to a higher level and ultimately go on to enjoy and appreciate the most popular sport in the world,” Dewazien said. “If we can help the local soccer community, there is no reason why we can’t ultimately see players coming through and eventually representing the city at the collegiate level.” The clinic, given at the Patterson Senior Center, was hosted by the Patterson Youth Soccer Association. PYSA offers its coaches several clinics throughout the year, working on camps and improving training activities over the course of the season. Friday’s clinic marked PYSA’s first opportunity to learn from Dewazien. “(Dewazien) talked not only about the psychological aspects of coaching the game, but also of the physical aspects,” PYSA coach Patty Garcia said. “Even though this was his first time out here speaking with us, he said that he would like to come back again.” Dewazien has coached youth soccer for more than 30 years, instructing tens of thousands of youth soccer coaches internationally. He holds licenses and certifications, including some from FIFA International Youth Coaching Academies, Dutch coaching courses and DFB German Football Association “A,” and is a USSF Referee instructor. He’s also developed several coaching guides. Dewazien brought a few copies of his book and a few of his CDs to the clinic. “He highlighted some of the key areas on both (the book and CDs) and was willing to answer all of our questions,” Garcia said. Dewazien is regarded as one of the pioneers of youth soccer in the United States. He has been the coaching director for the California Youth Soccer Association, the largest such association in the U.S., since 1978. He is best known for his philosophy on youth sports, which focuses more on developing players and people than on winning. “The outcome of our children is infinitely more important than the outcome of any game they will ever play,” he said.
