“I was looking for a project that would really impact the community.”

An Eagle Court of Honor, the culmination of years of effort and service, is planned July 26 for Arthur Hoxie of Boy Scout Troop 81.

To earn the Eagle rank, the highest in Boy Scouts, Hoxie established a garden for science classes at Creekside Middle School. He and his 15 helpers spent a collective 117 hours on the project in 2006.
Hoxie and his crew cleared a field behind the school, built planter boxes and put in plants to start the garden.
“I was looking for a project that would really impact the community.” Hoxie said.
Hoxie joined first joined the Scouts in 1996 as a Tiger Cub. He went on to Boy Scouts, he said, because he wanted to do more outdoor activities, such as camping, backpacking and hiking.
Hoxie earned his Eagle rank May 19 this year.
His father, Jerry Hoxie, was a Cub Scout leader, and his mother, Helen Hoxie, has been a Girl Scout leader for many years.
Helen Hoxie said they both are proud of their son.

“Arthur’s whole Scouting years have really been on him — he did the work,” Helen Hoxie said. “Scouting in itself has taught him leadership and community. Even him going into the Air Force — I think being an Eagle helped him get in.”
The 2008 Patterson High grad will attend Oklahoma State University in the fall, where he has a full scholarship through the U.S. Air Force ROTC.
During his years in the Scouts, Arthur Hoxie has been patrol leader, assistant patrol leader, three-time quartermaster and two-time chaplain’s aide with the local troop. He was also a senior patrol leader for summer camp.
He is also a member of the Order of the Arrow, a national Boy Scout service organization. He moved to Brotherhood rank after completing community service for a year and fulfilling certain requirements.
Besides his 70 nights of camping, Hoxie also attended summer camps Royanay, Mensinger and Ojato in Nevada.
This summer, Hoxie has worked for the Patterson Parks and Recreation Department and plays the role of Benedick in “Much Ado About Nothing,” a Patterson Repertory Youth Theatre production that will close Sunday. To date, he has been part of almost 20 acting performances for various groups since he was in middle school.
His goals now extend beyond the bounds of Earth. Hoxie will major in aerospace engineering when he gets to Oklahoma, in hopes of becoming a NASA star.
“I’ve always been fascinated with aerospace engineering,” Hoxie said, “and it’s a step toward my goal of becoming an astronaut.”
