“I’ve been best friends with this one girl for five years. She is practically the only one that I talk to at school, but out of the blue, she started hanging out with this other girl last week. Now, I feel out of the loop whenever I am around them. I do not know this other girl well. Should I try to be friends with her, too, or just consider our friendship over?” “You should at least try to get to know your best friend’s new friends. You never know — you may end up with more best friends.” — Ashley Sadiq “I would have to say you should at least try to get to know the new friend. Maybe you’ll find out that you have as much in common as you and your friend have. Plus, if you become friends with the new girl, you gain another friend.” — Chris Martinez “I don’t think that you should consider your friendship with this person to be over. All relationships have rough patches, but if it’s a friendship worth having — and five years of friendship is definitely worth fighting for — it should smooth out. “On top of that, you said that you guys are best friends. You never lose a best friend; they are always your best friend. Here’s an example: I moved away from Patterson for 10 years — I’m not exaggerating, either — but when I came back, my best friend and I picked up right where we left off. It’s like I’ve never been gone, and it’s super awesome. “Friends stick closer than brothers. They walk in when the rest of the world walks out. So even if she doesn’t stay close, you stay close, keep communication open. Don’t give up. She’ll come around, and when she does, it’ll be super awesome for you, too!” — Jeannie Hamilton
