A 17-year-old Patterson girl died early Friday after she lost control of the sport utility vehicle she was driving in west Modesto.

Police declared Yesenia Zarate, a 2008 Patterson High School graduate and Modesto Junior College student, dead after pulling her body from an upside-down Chevy Tahoe.

Six other people were in the SUV at the time of the crash and were taken to Modesto hospitals after the accident. They did not have life-threatening injuries, according to the Modesto Police Department.

Police did not release the identities of the passengers, who were a mix of adults and juveniles.

Zarate lost control of her vehicle at about 6:40 a.m. as she traveled north at high speed on Carpenter Road, according to reports from Modesto police. They suspect she drifted off the road as she crossed the intersection of Carpenter Road and California Avenue and clipped a parked trailer.

She lost control of the car when she tried to correct, causing her SUV to roll over multiple times. It came to a rest on its roof in shrubs along the side of the road.

Police found no evidence that drugs or alcohol played a role in the accident.
