Patterson Senior Center is both a gathering spot and a place to share a bite to eat.

Some seniors sat at tables and talked, while others played a game of dominoes and waited for lunch to be served at the Patterson Senior Center on Aug. 29.

Plates of baked ham, sweet potatoes, vegetables, fruit and a roll were placed on the tables. As folks started on the meal, they expressed their pleasure at the food offerings.

“It’s better than it was before,” said Joyce Montgomery, who helps serve the meals. “For the most part, it’s very good.”

Howard Training Center in Modesto has provided the lunchtime fare during the past year. In the past, the Salvation Army, Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department and Senior Opportunity Service Program have provided the meals.

Howard Training Center, a nonprofit center for those with disabilities, helps with behavioral management and activities. Some of those disabled participants work in the kitchen to cook meals for seniors in the county.

Regular attendee Ken Bennett said the food offerings include everything from stew and noodles to tacos and enchiladas, among other dishes.

“For institution food, it is very good,” Bennett said. “I put 20 years in the Navy, and it rates very high. They have a good variety — soups and salads are at the top of my list.”

The seniors who are regular attendees at the lunch said every so often things go awry, but it’s nothing major.

“Once in a while, we might get a burned potato, but we can’t complain,” Sylvia Dennis said.

Jill Erickson from the Stanislaus County Area on Aging said the agency has been pleased with the meal service from Howard Training Center.

“There have certainly been some meals that are better received than others, but the staff at Howard Training Center has been committed to continually trying to improve,” Erickson said. “They have demonstrated that they want to provide a quality, nutritious meal. They change menu items, adjust recipes and really work with the site managers to try and address concerns that may arise.”

The meals meet specific dietary guidelines, and a registered dietitian plans all meals. Meals must include fruits and vegetables — good sources of vitamin C — each day and vitamin A-rich foods at least three times a week.

Erickson said she has been impressed with the level of professionalism and quality of staff at Howard Training Center.

“They have had some challenges, like keeping up with the growth in the home-delivered meals program and getting through some staffing shortages, but they have persevered,” Erickson said. “It has really turned out to be a wonderful partnership, and we look forward to working with them for many years to come.”

Patterson Parks and Recreation coordinator Joey Chavez agreed that things have been going well with the meals program as he put away the dominoes last week.
“I hear no complaints,” he said.
