Verizon Wireless got the OK from the Patterson planning commission to put an 88-foot-tall tower a little east of downtown. The tower would stand south of a storage building near Las Palmas Avenue and First Street. There are already two cell towers in the Patterson area, but Alan Heine, a representative with Verizon, said a tower is needed in the downtown area to provide higher-quality coverage. City ordinances typically would not allow a tower to go so close to homes or so close to other towers. Still, the commission decided with a 3-0 vote to allow it in this instance. City planner Pat Bodin presented photo simulations of what the tower would look like from the nearby South Park and from Las Palmas Mobile Estates. From the park, the top of the tower would rise slightly above Patterson Vegetable Co. From the mobile home park, the top of the tower would be slightly visible above a row of trees. The commission’s main fear was that the tower would be an eyesore, and at least one resident attending the meeting gave voice to worries that it could be an ugly addition to the neighborhood. Commissioners wanted to make sure the tower’s color would prevent it from clashing with the surroundings. They also discussed the possibility of making the tower resemble a tree. City staff and Heine both said having something that looked like an isolated tree would probably be more of an eyesore than a simple tower painted in a muted color. The commission opted not to have the tower mimic a tree. “We’ll be right back down to paint it whatever color you want,” Heine said. Though Verizon is the company behind the tower, Heine said, it is typical for other service providers to also use Verizon’s towers.
