Inconsiderate meeting

EDITOR,
Last week’s Crows Landing meeting (July 1) to explain the West Park industrial development environmental impact report process to the public certainly did not take West Side residents into consideration.

Scheduled for 6 to 9 p.m., the meeting was at Bonita School, without adequate seating for the public, without a public address system, without air conditioning and without convenient parking for some attendees.

Even officials representing Stanislaus County and West Park found themselves standing throughout the meeting just inside the back door, forced to direct their comments and answers to the backs of many in the audience.

The West Park issue is far too important not to provide adequate facilities to accommodate those seeking information. Or is the public for some reason being punished for showing up and asking questions?

Patterson and Newman bakers are holding firm on the price of bread at 10 cents a loaf, though that price has recently gone up in nearby cities.

Farm prices are now swinging upward. Butterfat, the foundation of the West Side’s economy, has increased from 23 to 25 cents, plus 4 cents overage and 3.5 cents for delivery to the local Libby plant, making the total price 32.5 cents. Barley and apricot prices are also rising, as is the price of eggs.

Patterson’s garbage law has been upheld in Superior Court, and A.L. Watson was ordered to pay garbage collector Frank Hasek $9 for pickup. Watson claimed he did not need the service and handled his own refuse disposal.

The Patterson City Council has given final approval to an ordinance covering local beer sales. Establishments with on-site consumption will pay a fee of $15 a year, with $7.50 charged to those with the beverage purchased “to go.”
