Richard Lawrence was installed as president of the Patterson Lions Club on June 25 at Strings Italian Cafe.

Lawrence, a State Farm Insurance agent, has acted as president the past few months after taking over when Claude Mills returned to Oklahoma.

Other officers on the 2008-09 board are Scott Raley, first vice president; Art Trejo, second vice president; Mike McDougall, third vice president; Steven Perez, secretary; and Jerry Hoxie, treasurer.

Rod Yamaichi is the club’s tail twister, and Jerry Goubert is lion tamer. Mike Lara and David Sarasqueta are one-year directors; Adam Fruth and Don Hess are two-year directors; Pete La Torre and Jim McCluskey are membership chairmen; and Jim Cox is a past president.

The newest Lions members are Efren DeAnda, Rick Chavez, Jason Yamamoto, Jarod Lara and Richie Barbaste.

The Lions aim to have fun while serving the community, and the local club is noted for its annual chicken barbecue in the park during the Patterson Apricot Fiesta. The Lions also team up with Sacred Heart Catholic School parents to host two Fish Fry dinner fundraisers during the Christian season of Lent.

Club members participated in the American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Patterson in May and in the Fourth of July Families in the Park gathering, where they cooked tri-tip for hungry crowds.

Lions have faced off with Rotarians on the softball field in recent years to raise money for community projects. The group also invites members of other service clubs to have dinner with them each year at the city’s North Park.

Each September, the club hosts a Teachers Night and welcomes new teachers to participate. In February, the Lions also host a student speaker contest, where the local winner can go on to higher levels of competition.

Money raised in each case goes back into the community. The Lions give scholarships to graduating high school seniors through Patterson Recognizing Individuals Determined to Excel and donate money to local food banks, Scout troops, schools and Project FIITNESS (Fostering Individual Improvement Through Nutrition, Exercise and Student Specialists), a program to help Patterson High School freshmen live healthy lifestyles.

Lions also raise money for Camp Pacifica in Mariposa, a summer camp for blind and deaf children, and for the Lions Eye Health Program, an international effort to promote healthy vision and raise awareness of the causes of preventable vision loss.
