“We’re working on improving patient flow, helping staff with schooling and working on getting health care providers in the community.” — Maureen Brown Del Puerto Health Center director ![]() Maureen Brown In addition to overseeing the daily operations of Del Puerto Health Center on Ward Avenue and Highway 33, she helps out as a health care provider when needed. Brown, a family nurse practitioner, started at the center in early May and has since taken care of patients of all ages. At the end of June, she was named center director. Despite her new title, Brown continues to see patients regularly. “I did not want to lose the ability to also see patients,” she said. On top of her duties at the center, she is also enrolled at University of Phoenix. Brown has to complete one more class to earn her triple master’s degrees — in business administration, health care administration and nursing administration. Brown, who was born and raised in Shafter, will make the move to Patterson this month. She has worked in various health care clinics and started a few, too, one of which was a 3,000-square-foot clinic that includes pediatrics and primary care. Dr. Eric Ramos, who is the primary-care physician at the center, said Brown’s experience has been an asset to the center. “One of the things that impressed me was the amount and breadth of experience she has,” Ramos said. “She has more than 30 years of experience in health care and is committed to rural health medicine. “Maureen has great energy, enthusiasm and commitment to her job.” In the past month, she has covered for other staff members who have been ill or on vacation, has worked on the weekends and has gotten to know some of the folks in and around Patterson. “When the patient flow seems to get stacked up, I also step in, so patients don’t have to wait,” Brown said. She plans to help her co-workers expand their knowledge and serve patients better. “We’ve done really great things to help life goals and educational goals for the staff,” she said. “We’re working on improving patient flow, helping staff with schooling and working on getting health care providers in the community.” Brown said the doctors and nurses at the center are trying to teach people that health care involves the entire family, not just an individual patient. “We’re looking at improving community health with a perspective on the trans-cultural nature of the people we serve, the types of employment they have and the things they are exposed to,” Brown said. As a community-minded person, Brown said she looks forward to attending local meetings and joining a service club in Patterson.
