So-called ‘transparency’ isn’t EDITOR, Many people were very pleased with the Irrigator editorial on June 28 that cautioned the Stanislaus County Board of Supervisors to, “... take a close look at planning ...” regarding Gerry Kamilos’ West Park development. After Tuesday’s environmental impact report scoping meeting at Bonita School, even more people are concerned and even disgusted with the county and Kamilos’ so-called “transparency.” There has been way too much suspicion of backroom, and possibly under-the-table, machinations. Kamilos keeps claiming that he has these wonderful public meetings and dialogues with public and various government entities, yet he never answers the public concerns. It’s beginning to look worse and worse and more convoluted than most of us even anticipated in the beginning. If it looks too good to be true, it most likely isn’t true. Neither the county nor Kamilos is being straight with the public about the “hidden” costs of this project. That includes the impacts on water, traffic, pollution, etc., and ultimately, the prostituting of the West Side for a very dubious project. We’ve even seen the “phantom hand” of this project in county elections, and we anticipate there will be more of that in our local elections this November. Sandy McDowell, Patterson PATTERSON'S PAST 25 years ago — July 7, 1983 The big news in the just-ended rainfall season is a new all-time record of 26.12 inches for 1982-83. The total handily bested the previous mark of 21.36 inches set 25 years earlier. The Patterson Township Historical Society has received a major donation from Claude Delphia: an old switchboard used in the early years of the Del Puerto Hotel by guests summoning room service. Another recent donation was an ore cart used in Del Puerto Canyon mining operations more than 60 years ago. It was donated by Wayland and Josephine Fink and is on display on the front porch of the downtown museum. Robert Barsamian has received a Bachelor of Science degree in pharmacy from University of the Pacific in Stockton. There was a party Saturday at the home of Ed and MaeBelle Rogers for T.J. “Pete” Peters, who farmed in the Grayson area from 1913 until he retired. Peters turned 100. 50 years ago — July 4, 1958 Every Pattersonite knows it by now, but the city just chalked up the wettest rainfall season since 1889-90. The 1957-58 total was 21.36 inches, more than two inches behind that pre-Patterson season, and major flooding was experienced this spring. This city averages just under 11 inches a season. Robert Arambel is the new chairman of the Patterson Elementary School District Board of Trustees. A Sunday reunion of the Torrison family had five generations present at the home of Mrs. E.C. Torrison Sr. Lloydene Filippini is the new Venture Club president. Al Stehli left this week for Spain, where he will spend the summer months as an AFS exchange student. 75 years ago — July 7, 1933 Teachers in the elementary school district have taken a pay cut to let trustees trim $1,000 from their annual budget. Pot roast was selling for seven cents a pound this week at the local Safeway store. Picking of the local apricot crop is now in full swing after cool weather delayed maturity of the fruit.
