Patterson emigrant shot in Tracy Print E-mail

TRACY — A week ago, a man and woman who moved from Patterson to escape violence had the violence follow them.

The 29-year-old man was shot in the head, lost control of his car, knocked over a fire hydrant and plowed into an apartment on Grant Line Road in Tracy at about 12:30 a.m. June 28.

The victim was airlifted from El Pescadero Skate Park to Doctors Medical Center in Modesto shortly after 1 a.m. Doctors finished stitching up his wounds at about noon that day.

He was released Tuesday night.

The victim and his girlfriend — whom police said are both former Norteños and whose names weren’t released — were buying deodorant at a gas station across from Quick Stop on West Grant Line Road, according to the victim’s father, when two men pulled up in a newer blue Toyota Corolla.

The gunman fired a black handgun and hit the man behind his left ear, and the bullet fractured his jaw and exited cleanly through his cheek.

The victim dashed for his car and gunned it down Grant Line Road — driving westbound in an eastbound lane, according to his girlfriend, who survived the crash with enough composure to tell police what happened.

“We’re not quite sure right now how the shooting came about,” Robinson said. “But we’re thinking now that it might be a case of mistaken identity.”

Employees at the 24-hour liquor store said June 28 that because the shooting happened outside the store, the clerk working the graveyard shift saw nothing.

Police taped off three blocks of the thoroughfare early June 28, making for an expansive crime scene.

The victim’s girlfriend told police that she and her boyfriend recently moved to Tracy from Patterson to escape the gang life.

“Basically, they came here to start over,” Robinson said.

The girlfriend gave little description of the man who shot her boyfriend and fled the scene.

Police are still searching for the shooter, whom they described as a Latino male between the ages of 17 and 20, with short, dark hair. They said he stands about 5-feet, 6 inches tall with a thin build. He has a small tattoo on the left side of his neck.
