Wherever Vi Parker goes, she takes her camera.

Parker snaps photos of flowers, scenery, horses and even scuba-diving friends. Some of those pictures are on display at the Patterson Branch Library, 46 N. Salado Ave., this month.

Her love of photography started more than 60 years ago, when she was in a high school art class where students developed their own photos.

“I saw them doing miracles,” Parker said. “I just saw it, and I had to get in on it. I’ve been doing it ever since.”
These days, she takes classes in digital photography at Modesto Junior College, where she herself “does miracles.” Parker is also a member of the Del Puerto Art Group, a collection of artists who meet monthly and critique each other’s works.

Among her photos at the library is a shot of yellow flowers growing at the base of a long row of mailboxes near The Junction in Del Puerto Canyon. Parker snapped the photo while she and a friend, Betty Carlson, were on a trip looking for wildflowers.

Librarian assistant Sandie Segoviano said customers enjoy the variety of subjects in the photos.

“Library patrons can’t believe they are photos instead of oil paintings,” Segoviano said.

Parker also snapped photos of horses during the Patterson Township Historical Society trail ride in April as she followed along on the hayride.

“The horses are magnificent,” she said.

Another image features Parker’s own curious cats.

“I was photographing the flowers in my yard, and the cats got into the picture, so it looks like they are smelling the flowers,” she explained.
