“We’re still the same church — we are just splitting because of size. We’ve gotten so big ... .” — Cleve Morris Bishop, Crows Landing Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Crows Landing formally split June 15 to become a ward and a branch. Those who meet in the Crows Landing church building belong to the Turlock stake, which consists of wards and branches. A ward is a self-sustaining unit of the stake, while a branch is dependent on a ward. The Crows Landing ward boundaries traditionally went from Gustine in the south to Vernalis in the north. “Basically, the dividing line (for the new ward and branch) is Marshall Road,” Church Bishop Cleve Morris said. Much of what was once known as the Crows Landing ward is now called the Patterson ward. That ward, which runs from Marshall Road to Vernalis, includes Diablo Grande residents and has 470 members. The Crows Landing branch, which runs from Marshall Road south to Gustine, has 270 members under the leadership of its president, Richard Perrett of Gustine. The Patterson ward meets at 8:30 a.m., and the Crows Landing branch meets at 1 p.m. Sundays at the church, 18601 Crows Landing Road, in Crows Landing. “We are still the same church — we are just splitting because of size,” Morris said. “We’ve gotten so big and have so many people.” The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, founded by Joseph Smith in the 1820s, is headquartered in Salt Lake City, Utah. It has more than 13 million members worldwide.
